supplementary insurances

Supplementary insurance supplements the benefits of compulsory basic insurance. Around 80% of Swiss citizens have opted for supplementary insurance.

A useful addition to your basic insurance.

supplementary insurances

You have the choice between supplementary outpatient insurance and hospital insurance. A supplementary health insurance comparison will help you to find the right supplementary health insurance for your needs.

Which insurance policies are worthwhile?

Which supplementary outpatient insurance policies make sense? This depends above all on your circumstances and individual needs. If you need visual aids, for example, you will need to take out supplementary eyeglass insurance, which pays high premiums for glasses, contact lenses and possibly even laser eye surgery. If you would like to supplement conventional medical treatments with alternative medicine, you will also find supplementary insurance specifically for this need.

Other additional benefits include voluntary medication payments, rescue and transportation costs, treatment costs abroad and preventive medical measures. You should also take out supplementary dental insurance.

Supplementary dental insurance covers part of the costs of dental treatment, correction of misaligned teeth and orthodontic services up to a certain maximum annual amount

Would you like to cancel your supplementary insurance?
  • Please note that if you take out insurance, you can cancel it after one year.
  • To be on the safe side, do not cancel your old supplementary insurance until you have signed a contract with the “new” insurance company. The health insurance company is not obliged to take out supplementary insurance with you. You can refuse the new contract. And you can do this, for example, if the insurance company considers you to be (too) high a risk. For example, applications from people over the age of 50 or people with a certain illness are often not permitted.
  • Some insurance policies have a long insurance term of several years and a long notification period. If you do not cancel the supplementary insurance in good time, the specified period will be extended. So make sure you inform yourself at the right time for the correct notification period.
  • If the premium for supplementary insurance increases, you can cancel it within a certain period of time. Please note: Contractually agreed premium increases do not lead to a special right of termination.
  • Please note the notice period! Supplementary insurance contracts are generally valid for one year with a notice period of three months. In this case, notice of termination must be received by the insurance company by the last working day in September.

Individual insurance cover.

Swiss basic insurance already covers many medical benefits in the event of illness, accident and maternity. However, you have to make high co-payments for dental treatment, alternative therapies or visual aids. This also applies if you want to feel more comfortable during your hospital stay. With voluntary supplementary health insurance, you protect yourself against these additional costs and can also benefit from treatments that are not covered by compulsory health insurance.

Health insurance companies are free to decide which additional benefits they accept. In addition to the range of benefits, the premiums of different providers also differ considerably. It is therefore worth comparing before applying for supplementary health insurance.

The additional hospital insurance.

Almost half of all Swiss people have opted for supplementary hospital insurance. For example, general hospital insurance allows you to be treated in a hospital outside your country of residence at no extra cost. You can also choose semi-private or private health insurance.

Semi-private insurance, for example, offers accommodation in a semi-private property and in a twin room. With private insurance, you can also opt for accommodation in a single room.

Many health insurance companies bundle their supplementary outpatient benefits into packages. Package solutions seem convenient and often offer lower premiums than individual solutions. However, they only cover many expenses up to a certain maximum amount per year. It may also include services you don’t need. If you are looking for the best supplement for your needs, compare add-ons.Add-on premiums are based on individual insurance risks and the policyholder’s age and gender.

There is another difference between basic and supplementary insurance: supplementary insurance can also be terminated by the health insurance company after an insured event.

What do you need to consider with supplementary insurance?

The benefits and structure of basic insurance are governed by the Federal Health Insurance Act (KVG). On the other hand, supplementary insurance is governed by the Insurance Contract Act (ICA). In contrast to the KVG, there is no unconditional licensing requirement under the VVG Switzerland.

This may result in the insurance company refusing to accept you for supplementary insurance. Some health insurance companies require a physical examination before taking out supplementary health insurance.
