If your health insurance company is too expensive for you or another health insurance company offers more attractive benefits, you can switch to another health insurance company relatively easily. The prerequisite is that you have to cancel your old health insurance. In order for a termination to take effect in time, you must observe the notice period. Here you will find the applicable notice period and other conditions that apply to the termination of health insurance.
Basic health insurance is compulsory in Switzerland and is mandatory for all Swiss citizens. Many policyholders consider canceling each other’s policies when their insurance company announces a premium increase.Cancellations must always be made in writing. It is best to send by registered mail to ensure the fastest processing.
Your letter of termination must contain the following information:
If you wish to terminate your health insurance, you will not be in arrears with your premium payments. The termination only becomes effective when you send confirmation of the new policy to your old insurance company.
If you do not register for the new compulsory health insurance in good time, you will remain insured with your old health insurance company.
Swiss health insurers adjust their premiums annually. Your insurance company must inform you by the end of October about the development of your premiums for the coming year. If a premium increase is announced, you can cancel your basic insurance by December 31 and switch to another provider in January of the new year.
The letter of termination must be received by your previous provider by November 30. If you have taken out basic insurance with a standard/free choice of doctor model or basic insurance model with a deductible of CHF 300, you can also cancel by the end of June, in which case a notice period of three months applies. The insurer must therefore receive your letter of termination by March 31 at the latest for the termination to take effect on June 30.
You can cancel your supplementary insurance independently of your basic insurance. As a rule, the term at the end of the year is three months. You must therefore submit your notice of termination by September 30 for the termination to take effect on December 31. However, insurers may set separate notice periods for additional cover. Some insurance policies have a term of six months instead of three. You will find the exact term in your insurance policy.
If your insurer increases your premium for your supplementary insurance, the one-month reduction period applies.
Please note that voluntary supplementary insurance may be required for a medical examination. You may not be able to afford your preferred insurance. Therefore, do not cancel the old supplement until you are really sure that you are covered by the new insurance.
